BULGARIAN
GEOPYSICAL
SOCIETY

BULGARIAN GEOPHYSICAL SOCIETY (BgGS) is founded in 1990. Before this date Bulgarian geophysicists were members of the respective section of Bulgarian Geological Society founded in 1925.

Members of the BgGS are 138 Bulgarian geophysicists, working in the sections of the Committee of Geology and Mineral Resources, Scientific-Research Institute "Geology and Geophysics" Corp., Geophysical and Geological Institutes of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, University of Mining and Geology "St. Ivan Rilski", Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" and at a number of other sections, laboratories, firms and companies which activities are in the fields of geophysics, geology, archeology, building and ecology.

BgGS is a member and one of the initiators of the foundation of Balkan Geophysical Society (BGS). More than seventy Bulgarian geophysicists took part in the First Congress of BGS held in Athens 1996. Recently BgGS concluded Agreement of Association with the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE). The international relations are an important condition for the development of BgGS on the basis of exchange of information, experience and support.

During the period 1956-1991, besides the home geophysical events, Bulgarian geophysicists hosted several of the Annual International Symposia of Eastern European Countries, the last in Varna 1990. In 1995 Bulgarian Geophysical Society held its First National Conference of Geophysics. More than thirty scientific papers were

presented in several directions of topical geophysical researches in Bulgaria and the Balkan region. In this way were inaugurated periodical conferences as the most important geophysical events on a national level.

The next 2nd National Geophysical Conference of BgGS with international participation will be held in Sofia, October 21-23, 1998. The program includes sessions covering a wide range of subjects related to recent topics in geophysical investigations. The Organizing Committee cordially invites geophysicists from scientific and exploration organizations, as well as specialists from companies interested in geophysical activities, to attend the Conference in the beautiful city of Sofia.
